Watercolours for Well Being: Landscapes for adults

These workshops are suitable for anyone wanting to develop their watercolour skills in a friendly and supportive environment. You don’t need to worry about creating a “perfect” painting – the emphasis is on practising techniques, experimenting with watercolour and enjoying the process of creating landscapes.

Each session combines demonstrations, practical exercises and plenty of time to work on your own painting with guidance and support.

Watercolour Landscapes – Seven-Week Course

Explore the beauty of landscape painting in this relaxed and creative seven-week watercolour course.

Across the seven weeks, we’ll explore a different element of landscape painting each session, building confidence with watercolour techniques along the way. Each workshop will begin with a series of practical warm-up exercises, giving you time to experiment with techniques and brushwork before putting those skills into practice in a main painting.

The course is designed to encourage experimentation rather than creating an exact copy of a reference image, helping you develop your own approach to watercolour landscapes.

Week 1 – Skies & Clouds

Explore washes, wet-on-wet painting, colour blending, lifting and soft edges. We’ll practise creating different cloud and sky effects before producing a sky scene as our main painting.

Week 2 – Trees & Foliage

Experiment with different brush marks, dry-brush techniques, layering and mixing natural greens. We’ll then use these techniques to create a woodland or tree-filled landscape.

Week 3 – Mountains & Distance

Discover how to give your paintings a sense of depth using values, layers, colour and atmospheric perspective. Our main painting will feature mountains or distant hills.

Week 4 – Water & Reflections

Practise painting water through horizontal brushwork, wet-on-wet techniques, lifting and broken reflections before creating a lake or riverside landscape.

Week 5 – Countryside & Texture

Explore expressive ways of painting fields, grasses and natural textures using dry brush, splattering and different marks. We’ll bring these together in a countryside or moorland-inspired landscape.

Week 6 – Expressive Landscapes

Bring together the techniques explored throughout the course through quick landscape studies, colour experiments and expressive mark-making. You’ll then create a final landscape painting with more freedom to develop your own style and interpretation.

Week 7 – Your Landscape

Bring along a landscape photograph you’ve taken or an image that inspires you. Using the skills explored throughout the course, you’ll create your own watercolour interpretation with individual guidance and support.
